Tribute to Mr. Richard “Rich” Emerson Keefer

Richard “Rich” Emerson Keefer  -  1946 – 2012

On Friday, February 10, 2012 Rich went home to be with the Lord.  After his long battle with cancer he peacefully drifted off the ends of this earth in the comfort of his home.

Rich was a simple man with strong affections for his family and friends.  He loved the simple pleasures in life – spending time with people he cared for, reading, traveling, coastal vacations, and the art of relaxing.  He had a deep affinity for reading and learning.  Always the student seeking to learn and master the next subject of his interest.  Over the years Rich had built up an impressive personal library collection and display filled with practically every subject imaginable.

Rich was always the consummate professional who took his work and customers serious, but never himself.  During his long tenure with United Safety Apparatus, Inc., maker of Safe-T-Plus Steering Control, Rich was able to help take the small manufacturer to the next level.  With emphasis on building sound customer relationships through Safe-T-Plus’ channel network, Rich was able to push unit sales and company revenues to record levels.  Moreover, Rich built wonderful relationships from coast-to-coast with wholesalers and dealers alike.  He cherished their friendships and enjoyed spending face-to-face time with them as often as schedules permitted.

Rich never missed an opportunity to find humor in life.  He was always the prankster. The one calling he avoided ardently was writing.  Yet, he was a masterful wordsmith with a solid command of the pen.  I encourage you to read some of his short, yet insightful and folksy humor blog posts below.

Rich will be missed immensely by his family, friends, and extended Safe-T-Plus family. We will miss his humor, kindness, wisdom, and loving spirit.  He was always giving us a gift.  He invested himself in each of us.  For that, we are all a better person for knowing Rich.

On behalf of his family and extended Safe-T-Plus family, thank you for your thoughts, prayers, sympathy cards, and flowers during this difficult time.  We will strive to carry out Rich’s hard work and legacy left behind for us to follow.  He certainly set the standard high on the personal and professional fronts. We’ll do our best to make him proud.

Market Survey Shows RV Ownership is Growing

RV steering control, rv steering stabilizer, rv steering device, safe-t-plus

In this slumbering economy, it is nice to receive some good news on occasion, especially if its related to the Recreational Vehicle industry.  A recent survey conducted for the Recreation Vehicle Industry Association (RVIA) found that the RV/Motorhome owner community is increasing.

With a dark cloud still hovering over the US economy, folks are realizing the financial and recreational rewards associated with owning a motorhome.  In fact, the study noted 1 out of every 9 U.S. families now owns an RV.  The growth in these statistics should be encouraging for our market.

Want more good news:

Dr. Richard Curtin, Director of Consumer Surveys at the University of Michigan conducted RVIA’s RV Consumer Demographic Profile study.  The results showed that the US RV Nation had grown to a record high of 8.9 million households.  Comparatively, in 2005, there were only 7.9 million RV owners in the U.S.

Further, the RVIA study showed a steady increase in RV demand in 2011.  Specifically, over 21% of U.S. households are planning to purchase an RV in the near future.

Last point, the survey data further showed a new buying trend for RV’s. Over 70% of current RV owners are planning to replace and upgrade their current RV.  Leading the way is more fuel-efficient RV’s entering the marketplace.  With the baby-boomer generation entering into their golden years, many expressed interest in purchasing their first RV.

Naturally, the RV ownership survey is good news for all of us in the RV sector.  For companies like United Safety Apparatus, Inc., make of Safe-T-Plus Steering Control, we have see the RV/Motorhome market all but dry up.

Do you have plans to upgrade or purchase a new RV within the next 6 months?  Let us know, we would like to hear from you.

How a Steering Control Device Works

Safe-t-plus, steering control, steering stabilizer, rv steering stabilizer, steering device for rv

Have you noticed a lot of new TV shows that involve how stuff works and how it is made are appearing? I know what you’re thinking, TV is already is not good for brain-building exercises or if you sit too close you’ll go blind (My mother’s favorite). Either way, it is refreshing to see new programs focused on education and gaining new knowledge.

“How stuff Works” is a favorite. They also have an excellent website and video channel that is easy to select your favorite topics. Recently, they ran a small article on “How Steering Stabilizers Work”.  Although they are referencing steering stabilizers along with towing vehicles, the steering devices are the same.  To their credit, they did a good job.  We encourage everyone to read it.  It is short and interesting.

Below are some of the article’s highlights.

  • Coil-Hydraulic Steering Stabilizers contain compression coils that are designed to bring the steering wheel back to center after making a turn – this helps keep the vehicle centered allowing drivers to reduce their constant need to over-steer their vehicles.
  • Coil-Hydraulic steering stabilizers have a hydraulic piston in the center that acts like a shock absorber.
  • Hydraulics provide extra stability for your vehicle and keep the compression coil from snapping the steering back to center too quick

Essentially, they are briefly describing exactly a Safe-T-Plus steering control device is and how it performs. Safe-T-Plus uses the hybrid design of mechanical coils to keep the vehicle tracking straight down the highway.  This helps combat side winds, passing vehicles, ruts in the road, and the exhaustive need to oversteer your vehicle.  The hydraulics act as an absorber of any sudden movements to the vehicle’s steering.  Pot holes, bumps, and frightening tire blowouts shocks are absorbed by the hydraulics – keeping you in control of your vehicle.

Taming the Class C E-350/450 Chassis

Still fighting the oversteering and handling of your E-350/450 chassis vehicle? RV Steering control

Here are few tips that might help you tame the ride.

Class C motor homes approaching 30 feet may present some of the more difficult handling challenges to correct.  Many are very near gross weight before you get them fully loaded for travel.  Any coach greater than 20 ft puts it all behind the rear wheels, which is not usually a good combination.

To determine how the weight in your coach is distributed run it fully loaded for travel over a segmented truck scale.  It will be a wise investment to know exactly how your weight’s distributed.  Of course, try moving as much up front as is practical.

Almost every web forum you visit will have motor coach owners combining both a steering stabilizer with some type of track bar / sway bar system to handle the “roll” and keep the chassis centered over the wheels.  Although, steering stabilizers don’t directly address road wandering, strong shoving side winds, pulling winds from passing trucks, rut trucking, bumps and ruts, and the every-dangerous of a front-tire blowout, but a steering control unit does address each of them.  For clarity on the difference between a steering control device versus a steering stabilizer/dampner, see our article on ‘Steering Whatchamacallit’

The next recommended step is usually followed closely by some heavy duty shock absorbers.

There are several manufacturers and aftermarket dealers that provide excellent track bar, sway bar, specialized shock absorber, and steering control systems to correct or at least minimize your handling issues.

Use the key words above to search their for these product’s websites.  Please share your thoughts, ideas and experiences with us.  Let us know what has worked best for you E-350/450 chassis.

Sporting up the Ride on a Really Big Coach

Sporting up the Ride On a Really Big Coach

It’s difficult to sport up the ride on the really big coaches. Safe-T-Plus sports up big coaches

Manufacturers sell the soft ride in their brochures, but fail to mention that their RV’s drive like boats. It’s like driving a 500 square foot sail down the road which can be easily affected by shifting winds, passing trucks, and various undesirable road conditions.

Below are 3 quick tips to sport up and improve your motorcoach’s steering and handling abilites.

  1. A quick solution is a steering control device.  Point to note, a steering control device is   much different from a steering stabilizer and steering dampner.  Installing a steering control device will enhance your coach’s handling and tracking ability during a variety of adverse driving situations, such as road wander, side winds, passing vehicle shove winds, road ruts, potholes, bumps, and a dangerous front-tire blowout situation.
  2. The rolling side to side motion and weight transfers to either steer tire can be very nerve-racking.  Riding 8 feet up those little rolling motions can feel like very large side to side displacements.  The weight transfer in sweeping turns will have some effect on the outside tire’s grip resulting in some understeer through the corners.  It’s not really something that you can feel in the steering wheel- it’s just a result of the change of motion.  An after-market anti-sway bar could prove to be a solid investment to resolve this motion.
  3. In addition to the steering control, really large coaches benefit most from proper alignment, tire pressures near the top of their range to reduce the sidewall flex, and quality heavy duty shocks in good working condition.

It’s important to recognize that many different factors should be considered when trying to determine the best and proper correction for any handling issue.  Also, not all “fixes” for the same problem apply to each coach.  It’s always best to consider advice from a well qualified and certified source before proceeding so as to eliminate unnecessary and costly repairs.
